The Burnin Smyrnans highlight end to first day of competition with concert at Smyrna Surfari Clubhouse

Virginia Beach, Va. and Corpus Christi, Tex. — March 5, 2010 — The best professional and amateur surfing talent in the United States will converge to compete for a $10,000 prize purse in the scholarship, open shortboard an open longboard divisions. The 2010 East Coast Scholastic Surfing Championships, being held from March 26-28, 2010 at the New Smyrna Beach Inlet, is quickly approaching. The event will feature four-man heats, computerized scoring and ASP level judges. Online registration is now up and running and the event is also featuring a free event and banquet for contestants on Friday, March 26, with local reggae-funk band The Burnin Smyrnans beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Smyrna Surfari Clubhouse.

“For the individuals and teams competing for a record amount of prize money, the addition of a free concert and banquet is unique to our event and a great way to unwind after a day of competing,” stated Debbie Hodges, executive director of the Eastern Surfing Association (ESA). “It’s going to be a great event and a great display of surfing talent!”

The Burnin Smyrnans- made up of Jason Wigley on guitar / synthesizers, Eric Christian on saxophone / flute / vocals, Jason Rodgers on guitar, Anthony Diaz on drums / percussion / vocals, and Jeff White on bass / vocals- are quintessential Smyrna surfers, including their run-in with a gray suited local.

"As a surfer born and raised in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., I began appreciating the surfing culture and its history at an early age. The last eight years of my life I’ve been traveling the U.S. and Caribbean playing music and surfing, with the ocean fueling my songwriting,” stated Jeff White, bass / vocals for The Burnin’ Smyrnans. “The 2010 ECSSC is going to be insane and we’re thrilled to be involved with the ESA/TGSA's commitment to giving back to the competitive surfing scene!“

Instrumental to The Burnin Smyrnans playing at the 2010 ECSSC was Julie Doyle, president of the Texas Gulf Surfing Association (TGSA). “The Burnin Smyrnans are a killer jazz-infused, reggae-jam band with a great positive vibe, and great players! The Surfari clubhouse is a great venue to host a couple hundred of our closest friends on the water with excellent food and a live band.”

For info on accommodations, please e-mail Debbie Hodges at centralhq@surfesa.org or Julie Doyle at juliedoyle@modwest.com.

SLATER GOES DOWN IN ROUND 4

Posted by Sirfur Productions Thursday, March 4, 2010 0 comments

Kelly Slater fell prey to Jordy Smith in round 4 at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast held at Snapper Rocks in Australia.

In a heat that was filled with excitement, Smith held the lead most of the way.

In the final minute, Smith was able to fend off one of Slaters famous last second scores by using his priority to hold Kelly off until the whistle blew.

The event has been exciting so far with excellent weather and plenty of swell.

SLSA Fundraiser - March 13

Posted by Sirfur Productions Tuesday, March 2, 2010 0 comments

The Surfside Local Surfers Association is putting on a fundraiser in Surfside on St. Paddy's Day.

All proceeds from this event are going to restore the Surfside beaches.
Film Maker, surfer, and Surfside local Les Freese says "...we are putting a palapa in place of all the old houses that were on the beach. Each palapa will have the same name and color of the houses we have lost on beach dr, once sand is placed."

This is part of an ongoing effort by Surfside locals, as well as other Texan surfers, to restore Surfside's beaches to an acceptable state. Currently, Surfside is without sand.

Slater Tops the Scoreboard

Posted by Sirfur Productions Sunday, February 28, 2010 0 comments

Kelly Slater dominated in the first round of the 2010 Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast at Snapper Rocks.

Kelly has set the pace for the tour this season with an aggressive heat that yeilded a 9.27 wave and a heat total of 17.77, putting him ahead of the pack to start the season.
Granted, it is only Round 1 and there is plenty of surfing left in this contest, but the ferocity in which Slater took it to his opponents in round one shows that he intends to win his 10th World Title this year.

Now it's a race... the G-Town Open has priority over the Port A District, but who will get the waves first?

The lay continues...
